I Got Thrown Off Etsy and PayPal for Expressing My Belief in Biological Reality | Colin Wright
For Quillette, I wrote about my recent experience being thrown off PayPal and Etsy for life. In the case of Etsy, I was told that my products “promoted and glorified violence against protected groups,” despite my graphics being completely benign and inoffensive. For PayPal, I was given no reason, and told that I would need to have a lawyer submit a legal subpoena in order to find out why I was banned.
I explained how while losing my online store is very annoying, it is very different in both kind and seriousness to be kicked off a payment processor like PayPal. These are services that provide people income that they come to rely on. When payment processors become political, we tear at the fabric of our culture.
Whether we like it or not, payment processors are now a big part of the economy. And unless these companies can find a way to excise ideological bias from the implementation of their usage policies, some kind of government-imposed regulatory oversight may become inevitable.
