I am excited to announce that the academic book Sex and Gender: A Contemporary Reader, is set to be released on August 25th, and that pre-orders begin in just a few weeks on August 4th.

I coauthored the first chapter, simply titled “Two Sexes,” with developmental biologist Emma Hilton. In it, we provide a detailed and technical overview of the biology of sex and why there are only two sexes in nature. We also debunk many common misconceptions about sex, such as the notion that there are more than two sexes, that biological sex conforms to a “spectrum,” or that sex is merely a social construct.

This is significant because we went through a rigorous peer review process, meaning this chapter can be cited in academic papers. No longer can activists dismiss our articles in places like the Wall Street Journal as simply “opinion.” On August 25th, a thorough and explicit defense of the sex binary will now be part of the academic literature.

Comment Policy

There have been issues and complaints recently regarding the comment section beneath the articles. A small minority of users frequently engage in lengthy back-and-forth interactions that routinely devolve into hurling insults. I want to encourage open and rigorous commentary and debate that adds value to the articles and fosters a respectful community. Insults and ad hominem therefore have no place in the comments.

My comment policy is going to be very broad and very vague. This is done intentionally to avoid people searching for policy loopholes to exploit. In short, behave like mature adults. Assume good faith, and be kind to the other commenters. If someone insults you, flag the comment and ignore it. I don’t care who “started” it.

Violators will receive a 7-day commenting ban, and those who continue to violate the policy following their 7-day ban will be permanently banned from commenting.
