I sometimes have to remind myself that, twelve years ago, the US was swept up in #MeToo, and we were all told we had to protect women from bad actors. Nowadays, women are forced to justify the restrooms they use, the facilities they enjoy and even the sports they play, and when they try they are called bigots. So in a little more than a decade, this nation went from "Believe women" to "Shut up, Karen."
Sounds reasonable. Then these differences should show statistically at the level of olympic sports, so I wonder what the data is on that according to your research.
Of course it also matters what problem you are trying to solve, and it seems it once again must be the trans issue. If it was decided that men and women could compete in the same sport because there was no reason to separate them, it would simply mean fewer medals to go around.
Because women draw lighter bows, the fact that their scores are similar to scores achieved by men drawing heavier bows is comparing apples with oranges. (In fact men score a little higher nearly always.) If a guy who calls himself a trans woman competes in women's archery, he will elect to use a light women's bow and be able to use his bigger muscle endowment to advantage, as the author describes, even if he puts the same energy into the arrow. (With his longer arms he will actually be able to draw the bowstring farther and get more energy, thus more muzzle velocity and a flatter, more accurate trajectory. Less ballistic drop to compensate for.) If, on the other hand, he chooses to use the heaviest bow he can comfortably handle, he will get even more muzzle velocity and, all else being equal, outscore the women. Slower arrows drop farther over the distance to the target. (The mass of the arrow matters, too. Light arrows fly faster and flatter for the same energy input. People working light bows shoot light arrows, usually.)
The trans activists wanting to play women's archery would have to tell us whether they want to be allowed to use women's bows, like all the "other" women, because it will be easier on their stamina, or whether they want to use the heavier men's bow because it gives them an accuracy advantage. Either way, they're using their male muscular endowment to cheat women.
There may not be a score possible for this factor, but what if the women just WANT to have sport segregated for women only? What a crazy world it could be if only women's opinions and desires could matter.
Supposing that people were simply left alone? If some sporting body decided to abolish their sex categories then perhaps that's no one's business but theirs. Perhaps in darts or tiddlywinks some relevant organization decides to integrate and the motion passes. Why does anyone else need to concern themselves with it? I myself would expect that integration would be rather rare and obviously transwomen are in fact men so that's not a consideration. But if my chess club decides not to bother with sex categories, and our female membership goes along with that, then I'd say it's nobody's business.
Interesting, but wow. Your typical female archer/shooter sure is fat.
When I was at OTC the coaches of the men's archery team (I think 30-40 archers?) wanted them all to get VO2 max tests, which we found hilarious, since most of them had the physique you describe for the typical female archer. I dunno, maybe they are in better shape now? We told them to work on upper body strength and to do aerobic exercise to try to get a lower heart rate (more time to aim between beats) & hoped they would lose weight while they were at it. I can think of only a few sports in which more body fat is helpful (like synchronized swimming, but they didn't listen). And no, they didn't all get max tests.
Absolutely! And think about this, there are mixed teams in biatholon (Nordic skiing and target shooting, a sport invented for home defense in Norway before WW1) and archery. Can you imagine the men on these teams accepting an opposing team of all men?
The female sports category was created because males and females are different, with differences starting to develop in embryos long before birth.
That is the only reason necessary. If you're not a genetic female, you should be participating in another category.
